Texas freshman Micaya White had 16 kills as the third-ranked Longhorns swept Army 25-15, 25-22, 25-18 Friday night at American Campus Classic tournament at Gregory Gym.
White hit .324, added eight digs, and had four attack errors on 37 swings. She has recorded double-digit kills in four of five matches this season. Junior Paulina Prieto Cerame chipped in 12 kills and Yaasmeen Bedart-Ghani had a season-high 11 kills. Texas senior Chloe Collins set up the offense with 40 assists, recorded three aces and had nine digs.
Amber Clay led the Black Knights with 10 kills and 11 digs.
White and Bedart-Ghani put down two kills apiece as Texas started the first set on a 9-1 run. Army cut the lead to 15-11, but a kill by Bedart-Ghani, an ace by Cat McCoy and a kill by White gave Texas an 18-11 edge. The Longhorns maintained the lead and took the first set 25-15.
Army rallied late in the second set, coming back from a 19-12 deficit, to get within two at 23-21 after an attack error by White. Bedart-Ghani and White ended the threat with a pair of kills to clinch the set 25-22.
The Longhorns pulled away from Army in the third set with a 6-2 run to go ahead 19-13 and held on to win the set 25-18.
Texas will close play at tournament on Saturday against Miami at 4 p.m.
