This season, there was no volleyball player in the Big 12 better than Texas middle blocker Chiaka Ogbogu. The same can now be said about the southwest region.

Ogbogu was named the Southwest Region Player of the Year by the American Volleyball Coaches Association on Tuesday. Honoring the top players in its 10 regions, the AVCA lauded Ogbogu for her 2.55 kills and 1.7 blocks per set. Only Florida’s Rhamat Alhassan is averaging more blocks than Ogbogu, who ranks 14th nationally with her .401 hitting percentage.

On three occasions during her career, Ogbogu has been named an All-American by the AVCA.  On Dec. 13, Texas will find out if Ogbogu will join Demetria Sance and Haley Eckerman as the program’s only four-time All-Americans.

Ogbogu was accompanied on the AVCA’s Southwest All-Region team by teammates Cat McCoy, Ebony Nwanebu, Ashley Shook, Lexi Sun and Micaya White. All six players represented Texas on the Big 12’s all-conference team, and the conference’s coaches selected Ogbogu as their player of the year.

Texas (26-2) will travel to Stanford on Friday for a third-round match against Utah (24-9).
